Tsereteli statue in St. Petersburg

 

September 25th saw the unveiling of a huge Peter the First made by Zurab Tsereteli in St. Petersburg.

The monument presented to the city by the sculptor notorious for his love of big dimensions is 12 meters high. It has been set up on Vasilyevsky Ostrov, in front of Pribaltiyskaya hotel.

The monument opening ceremony was accompanied with protest actions. Three of the picketers were arrested. The picketers had come forward with placards against infill construction in the district of Vasilyevsky Ostrov.

It is not for the first time that dwellers of Saint Petersburg had clamoured against Tsereteli's sculptures to be set up in their city.
